From how he described taking it, this drug was almost certainly some kind of hallucinogen. Maybe lsd. Maybe some thc edible. Either way, these are the sort that people, out of inpatience, end up taking more than they intend. So, more likely a very bad trip rather than a proper overdose. If he had snorted a line of heroin or coke (drugs more typically associated with ODs), he would've felt the effects nearly immediately. People can still overconsume these, but not so much out of being "inpatient."
