While this seems profound, this is just a extension of absurdist philosophy. That can go two ways: you can either succumb the fact that life has no meaning and pull your own plug, or live for happiness despite the fact that nothing really matters. When faced with that decision, most nihilists choose the latter. All we know for sure in this world is what makes us happy so why not pursue those endeavors?
Okay I’ll be good for me and I’ll let you know what time I can do that for me and you guys please please answer my question please answer please call please thank me you have to call my dad to me so I’ll text him later if I can leave my car please let me know when I get back to my work I need you a couple of questions I have a lot to ask but I’m just waiting on you my phone now I can’t answer your call but I’m just trying so hard to talk with me but I’m just not trying so much for you and I just want you and your friends and I don’t understand what you’re doing and I’m not sure what you want I do but I’m just not trying so much for you 😮😮😮😮😮
We might be we might stop reproducing now. We've got people who are dating AI and a lot of people you know are just opting to opting out completely or out of relationships or opting to be gay. You know so really we might be headed towards that direction. I can kind of see why Elon Musk would say so. I don't have a bunch of respect for Elon Musk but when he said that you know something possibly be agreeing with.
Hate to say it, but I'm pretty much exactly in the same mindstate as Rust Cohle right now. The older I get the more I realize just how much of my life, in particular how many things I've valued or found solace or joy in, are either partial or full lies and its really shattered my world view and value of life. That said, I'd rather "deny my programming" in a more productive and positive manner than simply opting out of this raw deal. Guess I'll hang around and see what happens since I too "lack the constitution for suicide."
Reading Carl Jung and work like his is the antidote to this style of thought.
My shadow self still resonates with Rust though, what he says in this 60 second clip sums up my greatest nightmare, that consciousness, ego and self is simply an evolutionary fluke. What could be more horrifying than that?
I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in human evolution. We became too self aware; nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself.. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law.
We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, a secretion of sensory experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody’s nobody.
I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.
So what’s the point of getting out of bed in the morning?
I tell myself I’d bare witness; but the real answer’s that it’s… obviously my programming, and I lack the constitution for suicide.
I'd like to think I can relate to what he says now and at the end about light winning, its basically the same. not as self-serving self aware consciousness but indulgent self aware consciousness. Rust was indeed a realist imo
I don't remember much from the first season of True Detective, as it was a while ago. But this conversation has always stuck with me. I felt it resonated with my own thoughts and feelings, and it just made sense. No matter how nihilistic this may be, on the other hand, if you look at our species and how we treat each other, especially in this day and age with all sorts of dangerous and crazy shit going on in the world, I'm like.. yeah we don't deserve to exist as a species. Life is suffering and we as a species only prolong it.

One of the most profound quotes, by one of the most profound characters, of the most profound episodes, of the most profound series. Then. Season 2 was an utter disaster. This character should still be on TV.
whats the song name where they used that first line "we are creatures that should not exist by natural law" and after that there was a wolf howl. anyone know?
I agree with his premise but not with his solution. To stop reproducing might be precisely the inevitable effect of the tragic misstep he talks about.
The thing about self-awareness is that we too arrogantly assume we're less ignorant than others, we forget people aren't shaped by knowledge but by their environment. The edge of self-awareness lies in articulating the problem, not solving it.
This is how I feel after my first Ayahuasca ceramony 🙂

I think this show had a lot of influence on how i think today. It's not my only influence, but i align myself with this idea very well.
probably the most well writed nihilist character to ever exist, so deep and pessimistic but not edgy, just raw reality
The industrial revolution and its consequences were a disaster for the human race

One of the best runs of television ever made.

He's like depressed man but keep trying doing his job.

Imagine Max Payne and Rust Cohle as partners…
Can someone explain this monologue in simple terms?
He isn't wrong.
Peak Television
Alright. I'll pirate the show
Edit: 8 hours well spent. Last scene got me crying.
But what's up with the Lovecraftian reference
Raskolnikov
I'm extinct
“…well, once there was only dark. You ask me, the light's winning.” – Rust Cohle

“Matthew, your line was ‘it’s nice out today’”
And, he's absolutely right.
Lmfao the ignorance. Humanity is absolutely an abomination
Amor fati.
Heard this on a Midwest emo mixtape a few years ago and it’s hits just as hard in 2026 and it did in 2020
Given the drastic drops in birth rates around the world, I think most of us agree.
Any idea how we could remedy this problem? No humans would make the world a quite place. We could all enjoy the silence. 💀😂
